Veterans champs on way

VETERAN golfers are preparing for the 2020 championship round.

The annual event will be held at Riverside on July 6 with strict COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of players and officials.

But with the government relaxing restrictions around community sport, competition conditions will almost be back to normal.

Players are reminded when registering to provide their phone number, which is one of the requirements.

Play will get under way with a shotgun start, which ensures social distancing guidelines are maintained.

From Monday, 50 people can congregate at one time and with last year’s field reaching 48, organisers are hoping to reach capacity.

In a first, ladies will join their male counterparts in the championship.

In line with current practice, players will score and sign their own card.

There will be a one-person per cart, rakes won’t be used in bunkers and flags can’t be moved. A nearest-the-pin competition will be held and lunch will be provided.

All members are invited to play, however players must have played a minimum of two veteran events last year or in 2020 before the championship to be eligible.
