Coomealla golfer gets that ace feeling

COOMEALLA golfer Frank Geyer proved you’re never too old to get a thrill out of sport as he celebrated the fourth hole-in-one of his life on Wednesday.

The 88-year-old aced the seventh hole at his home course during the midweek competition to get his name up on the honour board.

“It rolled on but because there were tree shadows on the green we were unable to see it go in,” Frank said of his perfect shot.

“One of the group thought it might have gone over the back, so I went in to the back of the bunker and it wasn’t there, but then I went and looked and saw the little white thing in the hole.”

Frank said he used his hybrid wood on the 137 metre par three and hit a low-trajectory shot in at the pin.

But he admitted his brilliant hole-in-one was a shining light on an otherwise bleak round.

“Apart from that, I was pretty terrible,” he said with a laugh. “I think I had something like 10 more shots than I should have had.”

Frank said his previous hole-in-one was during a Coomealla Golf Club weekend trip to Murray Downs more than 20 years ago.

He also hit one “many years ago” at Cessnock, while his first hole-in-one was shot while he was playing by himself.

Frank lives almost on the course at Coomealla and has had a lifelong passion for golf.

He said he still tries to play twice a week and remains as active as possible.

On Friday he split a couple of loads of wood before heading to the practice fairway to hit between 90 and 120 shots, knowing that it only takes one to have an unforgettable round.
