Sunraysia golfers pleased to be back on the greens

BIG fields will again hit Sunraysia golf courses on Saturday after the Victorian Government lifted a ban during the week.

Both Riverside and Mildura welcomed back full fields for Wednesday competitions after the ban on golf due to coronavirus restrictions was lifted on Tuesday at 11.59pm.

The Victorian Government is now allowing gatherings of 10 people outdoors as long as social distancing is observed, with golf to be played in groups of four.

The NSW Government also allowed golf to again be played in groups of four during the week.

“Everyone is pretty excited to be getting back out there,” Gardiner said.

“Since Daniel Andrews made the announcement, my phone has been going nonstop, so everyone is champing at the bit.”

Local courses on the Victorian side of the Murray River are in mint condition after more than six weeks without play.

The extended break has allowed both clubs to make improvements to their courses, with green staff kept on during the lockdown period.

Mildura Golf Resort manager Nick Cavallo said Monday’s announcement, while expected, was a “big relief”.

“We just need some momentum now, but thank god we are back on track,” he said.

“We have our competition on Wednesday which is already pretty full up and if we can get back to groups of four we should have a bigger field on Saturday.

“People have been updating their memberships and there have been a lot of enquiries already today, so people are certainly happy to have golf starting again.”
