District golf results

RIVERSIDE

A SCORCHING score of 42 from Peter George on Monday in the veteran and friends competition saw him claim victory over Ken Upton (39).

NTPs were: Alan Connolly (seventh, 62) and George (18th, 310).

Sally Watson found her rhythm with her new sticks, putting together some great scores. 

Tuesday’s Stableford was a comfortable win for Sally, finishing on a lovely 37 in front of three on 34, Pat Riordan, June Hensgen and Anne Parker. 

NTPs were:Hensgen (fourth, 480), Watson (seventh, 908) and Riordan (12th, 28, and 18th, 220).

The men played their Wednesday monthly medal with some spectacular scoring.

Malcolm Kalms started the ball rolling with his amazing (80/65) the best overall score of the day. 

It took a countback to split A Grade, with Ned Klemm (86/68) grabbing the honours over Graeme Southwell (80/68).

After his 88 off the stick, Laurie Riordan also had an exceptional 68 net to win B Grade from John Wass  (92/70).

NTPs were: John Wass (fourth, 65), George (seventh, 610), Kalms (12th, 770), Tony Coppola (17th, one) and Paul Wilkinson (18th, 11).

Thursday was the last monthly medal and putting comp for 2019 and another day for Sally Watson to shine, collecting the medal with a magnificent (96/67). 

Two nice scores had to be separated for the placings. Margie Dunlop (100/72) was runner-up after a count back against Liz Wallace (106/72).

Sally topped off her week by taking home the putting trophy as well, on a super 27 putts.

The ladies’ nine-hole comp saw Julie Holland with a win on 12, followed by Lorraine Erny.

NTPs were: Lyn Saunders (fourth, 158, and 12th, 124), Lorraine Palmer (seventh, 370) and Meg Hamence (18th, 128). 

Friday’s medley nine-hole Stableford was won by Gavin Graham (22). It was a three-way countback for second. Martin Dane came out the better, followed by John Fraser and Ray Cottle.

NTPs were: Cottle (second), David Williams (fourth), Ivan McKenzie (fifth), David Smith (sixth), Ian Fleming (seventh) and Rob Garioch (ninth). 

The final 2019 monthly award for the ladies was a good day for Janet Luke, who came away with the win after her lovely round of (86/71). Lisa Garioch (80/72) was runner-up.

NTPs were: Saunders (fourth, 282 and 18th, 80), Tracey Bryan (seventh, 590) and Garioch (12th, 36).

Stroke and monthly medal was Saturday’s game for the men in three grades.

Michael Holcroft once again proved his consistency, blitzing the field to win A Grade and collect the medal on an outstanding (77/68). After a countback, Jeramiah Johnson (84/74) was declared runner-up over Brad Steer (77/74).

Jon Slatter also underwent a countback and proved the better to grab B Grades’ medal with (85/70). Claude Dawson lost the countback, but picked up second place on (84/70). Connolly was just one behind (87/71) in third place.

David Smith had a very comfortable win in C Grade after he smashed out a sensational (93/65) and came away with the medal. Brian Young’s score on any other day would have been a winner, but he had to settle for second place after a great round (93/69). Third went to Ken Upton (91/70).

John Fraser came away smiling after his super eagle on the par-four 13th.

NTPs were: Smith (fourth, 73), Rob Garioch (seventh, 391), Darren Gray (12th, 150), Brad Steer (17th, 166) and Cliff Cooke (18th, 110).

The weekly NTPs went to Alan Connolly on the seventh and Paul Wilkinson the 18th.

Sunday’s Medley Stableford was another countback thriller , this time between Peter Barbary and Mick Innes, both completing rounds of 39. Barbary had the luck on his side, claiming the win, with Mick settling for runner-up. 

NTPs were: Oscar Manix (fourth, 4, and 12th, 620) and Jim Callaway (seventh, 265).

COOMEALLA

LAST Wednesday’s men’s Stableford A Grade winner was Ray Lyons (39) from Michael Baynes (35) and Ross Robertson (35).

The B Grade winner was John Gray (44) over Barry Waters (40) and Neil Saunders (39).

NTPs were: Baynes (third, 600), Ivan McKenzie (seventh, 270) and Robertson (11th, 701, and 18th, 52).

Last Wednesday’s ladies’ Stableford winner was Jill Forster (36). Runner-up was Margaret Midgley (36).

NTPs were: Adel Dal Corobbo (third, 478), Jenny Smith (seventh, 180), Forster (11th, 278) and Maureen Bailey (18th, 55). 

Friday’s nine-hole Stableford winner was Barry Waters (22) over David Guild (21).

NTPs were: Matt Bottomley, Troy Neville, 11th, 102) and Aaron Blake (18th, 300).

Saturday men’s Stableford A Grade: Winner: Bottomley (40). Runner-up: Ivan McKenzie (39). Third: Lyons (37).

B Grade: Winner: John Thomson (38). Runner-up: Bob Fliener (37). Third: Waters (36).

C Grade: Winner: Robert Stephens (39). Runner-up: Ian Perks (37). Third: Mac Warchow (37).

NTPs were: Doug Rowsell (third, 360), Neil Saunders (seventh, 182), Vince Dicheria (11th, 198) and Graeme Burrows (18th, 144).

The ladies’ Stableford winner was Sue Laird (37), just ahead of Sharon Morrell (36).

NTPs were: Marg Midgley (seventh,301), Kylie Walters (11th, 53) and Nia Whittle (18th, 60).

Sunday Volkswagen Scramble saw 22 teams compete and Tim Rix, Glen Stephens, John Thompson and  Mark Treagle (55.12 net) emergted victorious.

Runners-up were Mark Hann, Rod Hunt, Rick Hill, Kylie Walters (55.37), followed by Dani Plumridge, Tim Plumridge, Tim Mitchell, Daniel Baskin (56.50) and then came Ross Robertson, Alan Scorer, Ron Hunt and  Peter Duscher (56.87) Fifth were Waters, Aaron Blake, John Blake and Phil Matotek (57.37).

NTPs were: Glennis Warrior (third, 201),  Waters (seventh, 105), Brendon Rowse (11th, 183) and Ben Kerr (18th, 250).

Congratulations to MDGA Country teams for winning their divisions in Melbourne last week. The men won Division One and ladies claimed Division Two to move up to Division One next year.

RED CLIFFS

THE men played a par game on Wednesday with Kevin Leach being the winner on countback from Neville Walker – both finishing square.

NTPs were: Leach (eighth), Graeme Duffy (12th), Michael Hogan (15th) and Neville Birch (18th).

The ladies’ Stableford A Grade winner was Sue Johns (36) from Margaret Stanbrook (34). 

In B Grade, Margaret Maynard (37) was the winner from Lea Walmsley (36).

NTPs were: Sandy Wright (third), Julie Warne (eighth), Sally Jones (12th), Stanbrook (15th) and Johns (17th).

Saturday’s action was Stableford for ladies and men. 

Jill Gleeson (37) won ladies’ A Grade from Sandra Marwood (36).  The B Grade winner was Kath Underwood (34) from Noreen Smith (33).

NTPs were: Gleeson (third and 15th), Bobbie Ramsay (eighth) and Sheryl Blagus (12th).

The men’s competition was aggregate Stableford. Al Rayner and Mal Blagus combined well to score 71 to win from Rohan Hillier and Chris Barko (68).

NTPs were: Blagus (third), Hillier (fifth and 15th), Ray Pain (eighth), John Prictor (ninth), Jeffrey Scott (12th) and Rayner (17th).

WENTWORTH

WELL, the players have got it righ,t not like the scribe that forgot the write up last week but here it is.

Winner on countback Wiley Peter Lush from Ron Moore both with 37 points .

NTP was Lush with 390cm on the eighth – the prize everyone wants to win.

Mr Risky went to Graham Clarke whose form has dropped away very quickly with only 25 points.

Teachers are on holidays, Richmond have won a trophy and the handicapper is happy.

Winner: Howard Hankinson (42) from playing partner Dave Gardiner (39).

NTP on the 12th – the regular Ron Moore (555). Mr Risky yet again, back-to-back, Clarke with 22.

Coming events: Today: Chicken Run starts at 5pm. Thursday: 9.30 tee off. October 20: Murray House: 11am tee-off.  Still room for teams but no carts available.

MERBEIN

OUR monthly medal was played on Saturday with M. Thomson having another good round, shooting a 72/68, followed closely by three players shooting 70 net.

Wednesday’s winner was R. Walder (38 points) from Greg  Kerr (37).

Saturday’s winner was Thomson (72/68) over M. Cook (76/70).

NTPs were: A Fairlie (second, 45, and eighth, 70), Walder (third, 610), Thomson (14th, 110) and S. Cordell (16th, 200).

Coming events: Today: Stableford 12.30pm hit-off.  Friday: Twilight golf Stableford. Saturday: Stableford 12.30pm hit-off. 

Friday sees the start of twilight golf. Cost is $10, which includes a beverage after the game. Hit off around 5.30pm. Winner gets a $50 meat pack and runner-up six Prov one golf balls. All golfers welcome to play.

VETERANS

THIRTY-eight district veteran golfers contested this month’s event held at the Merbein Golf Club on Monday. 

The course was in good condition and, with the weather cooler, the field managed a timely start under the direction of our captain John Green. 

The field was boosted by a great contingent from Ouyen and four other guests. The scores that were needed to win each grade were excellent. 
George Mason had the best overall score with a +5.

In A Grade, Dennis Grigg showed great form to record a +4 to win ahead of Steve Clarke, whose +3 secured him second place. 

Mason was the B Grade winner with Ken Upton taking out the runner-up prize as he played well for a +4.

NTPs were: Greg King (third), Don Pohlner (eighth) and Ron Leamon (16th). The 12th provide elusive and leaves all of us with a challenge next time.

Once again the club provided an excellent lunch and we thank the members who cooked it and who served drinks at the 19th hole.

Members were reminded that our next meeting will include our annual general meeting. The event will be held at the Red Cliffs Gold Club on November 11. It will be a single Stableford competition.

MILDURA

THE Mildura ladies played single par last Tuesday and Jan Mierswa won with a score of +2. Eily Raeck was second (-1). 

Margaret McGlashan and Margaret Morrison both scored -1 to take third and fourth places. 

NTPs were: Carol Zimmerman (first, 720), Sheryleen McGlashan (second, 125), Margaret Morrison (10th, 254) and Jean Moore (12th, 525). 

A good field of men played single stroke in two grades for the monthly mug last Wednesday. Ray Quirk had the best score of the day (net 68) to win A Grade from Andrew Stanbrook and Jason Marks (both 70). 

Stephen Pongrac (72) won B Grade on countback from Des Zimmerman and Alan Steedman. 

NTPs were: Graeme Polkinghorne (first, 118), Rob Toms (second, 218 and also the pig prize), Ron Leamon (10th, 433), Ron Rowse (12th, 292) and Geoff Hazeldine (18th, 193).

The ladies and men played single Stableford on Saturday, which was a “doing it for Jarrod” fundraiser. 

Rodney Begg won A Grade scoring 37 points, Gavan Tellefson and Tom Crouch (35 apiece) finished second and third. 

David Whitelaw had a good day, scoring 41 points, which won B Grade from Paul Wilton (39) and Peter Briggs (38). 

In the ladies’ section, Sue Walmsley and Jan Mierswa both scored 37 points to finish first and second on countback. 

NTPs were: Gary Fumberger (first, 138), Rob Toms (second, 195 and the pig prize, and 10th, 334), Mierswa (12th, 26) and Lawrence Smith (18th, 160).

Coming events: Today: Men’s single Stableford. Friday: Ladies’ 18-hole Stableford, plus the start of the spring/summer Telstra Twilight series of nine-hole Stableford for men and ladies. Saturday: Men’s and ladies’ 18-hole stroke for the monthly mug, which includes the playoff for medallist of the year in A, B and C grade men. Sunday: Medley Stableford 18-hole event. Monday: Veterans’ Stableford at Merbein. Tuesday: Ladies nine-hole Stableford and an 18 hole stroke at Mildura. Wednesday: Men’s single Stableford.
