Phoenix rises to challenge

HIS side didn't get the win, but Merbein's Phoenix Hemming showed great composure in just his third game of senior football.

The 15 year-old kicked two goals against Wentworth, including a crucial score as the game hung in the balance late in the fourth quarter.

As a junior in this year's under 16s team, Hemming has split most of his time between the midfield and forward line.

Playing predominantly as a forward pocket, the young Magpie has managed to kick a goal in all of his games at the top level.

"I started off a bit slow, got a bit of the ball and ended up with two, but I don't think it was my best game," Hemming said.

Another Hemming who debuted for Merbein earlier in the year was his 16-year-old cousin, Will, who has laced up the boots for eight games this season.

With his rising star selection for this round, Hemming was happy to have bragging rights over his older relative.

"In under 16s, myself and Will are leaders, then you come into the seniors and you just learn a lot, they really get around you which is great,"

Earlier in the year, Hemming also played in the under 15s Dreamtime at the P event, a game where he was named best on ground and received a medal from AFL great Kevin Sheedy.

Coach Joe Cavallo said he'd liked what he'd seen so far from Hemming.

"He's played three senior games now and looks right at home, so he's one that we will put more work into over the summer," he said. ***As this week's SFNL Rising Star, Hemming receives $75 courtesy of Mildura & District Real Estate.
