WOODWARD Foods, which operates northwest Victoria's last large-scale abattoir, has gone public in what it believes is a fight for the future of the Swan Hill Livestock Exchange.

The company has as many as 300 staff on its payroll – plus seasonal employees – and managing director Robert Woodward said the saleyards "are a very important cog in the wheel for us".
