A NEW bush kinder for kids in the Robinvale district is taking root.
Murray Valley Aboriginal Cooperative is partnering with the Mallee CMA to develop the Bush Kinder program, which will act as an accessible space for local children to learn about Indigenous culture and the importance of environmental sustainability.
MVAC's education and compliance officer Andy McLachlan said the idea was formulated by Aboriginal Elder Aunty Rose Kirby.
"She wanted to leave a legacy and part of that was to develop a safe space for kids to learn about Aboriginal culture and the environment including things like growing their own plants and bush tucker," he said.
"The Bush Kinder program will utilise space owned by MVAC to create a bush environment for kids to explore and get their hands dirty in a natural environment.
"The idea of the bush kinder is it will remain a natural environment rather than a standard playground."
Mallee CMA's executive manager of communications and engagement Lisa Merrett said they had worked closely with elders to formulate the plan.
"The plan will incorporate tactile areas for kids to learn and hear stories of culture with a focus on allowing kids to learn through nature," she said.
MVAC and Mallee CMA will look to have concept designs completed in the next few months and will seek community feedback through family days and community events.
"The grand plan has some great aspect to it and we will look to phase it in through several stages over the next 12 months." Ms Merrett said.
"We are also calling on community members who may want to offer labour, they may have some equipment, it might be through dollars, there will be sponsorship opportunities and businesses can get involved that way," she said.
"We are looking for things like a garden shed, a rain water tank or a garden bed things like that would be really practical and helpful."
