Local footy is now on your phone

LOCAL footy is on your phone from today.

Sunraysia Daily will keep you up to date from the first bounce with live scores from the four Sunraysia Football Netball League matches.

And then, once the siren has sounded on the first round of matches, we will have news and pictures from around the grounds as part of our online gameday coverage.

It’s as easy as logging into the Sunraysia Daily website.

Sunraysia Daily has long been this community’s home ground of local football and netball news, views, great pictures and results.

And now you can follow every match with us, as they unfold.

It’s a late start to the season, but it promises to be worth the wait.

Former AFL players have returned to their home clubs to add extra hype to the SFNL, with Sam Kerridge taking over as Mildura coach, Matt Dea taking the reins at Imperials and athletic Wentworth star Jarrod Brander expected to make a big impact in just his first season out of the AFL system.

There is also AFL talent again at Ouyen United where former Hawk Dallas Willsmore is returning to his home club to play, alongside his mate Cory Gregson, a former Geelong player, and a host of players with SANFL experience.

There is plenty of intrigue around Robinvale Euston, which has lost a few key players, but also gained some talent from Queensland. How those recruits perform could dictate whether the Eagles are again playing finals.

Irymple will look to add a third consecutive premiership to the cabinet, and there is nothing to suggest Dan Coghlan, Nick Mee and their talented group of Swallows are about to drop off the perch.

And could Mildura, under Kerridge, be the big improvers after finishing second last in 2022? The Demons have added a few fresh faces, as well as welcoming back a few older stars, giving reason for optimism at Brian Weightman Oval.

The netball season is also shaping up to be a cracker.

Ask anyone who was there and the highlight of last season was the A Grade netball grand final at the new Mildura Sporting Precinct.

As the wind blew outside, Wentworth and Ouyen United played out a match for the ages inside the stadium in front of a huge crowd.

Underdogs Ouyen looked liked causing a major upset, until Amanda Edwards’ team showed their championship qualities in the dying stages to rally and snatch victory by one goal.

This year, the new outdoor courts are ready for action at the precinct, with tenant club South Mildura set to create history today when it hosts Irymple.

The facilities look fantastic for the netballers, and will be a game-changer for the club, as work continues on the oval to improve spectator viewing.

While there are concerns at some clubs about junior numbers, clubs and their volunteers have worked tirelessly over the off-season to get ready for today.

Our team of football and netball writers, as well as our brilliant photographers, can’t wait to cover the action.

Local sport is the talk of country towns, and we are again front and centre of the conversation.

So join us for great 2023 season from the first bounce today.

And pick up the newspaper on Monday for your full wrap inside the liftout.

Let the games begin.
