Settlers win fourth flag

MILDURA Settlers have become the most decorated side in the Sunraysia Cricket Association Women’s competition after claiming the 2024/25 premiership on Friday.

Setts defeated previous champions Mildura West by eight wickets to claim their fourth flag in the competition as a standalone club.

They also won in 2021/22 in a merged side with Gol Gol for that season.

Settlers and West had been by far the dominant teams of the campaign, their solitary losses coming against one another, so it was all set up for a cracking grand final at Mildura Senior College.

Batting first, West managed 4/102 in their 20 overs, a solid total, however, defending it against Setts batting outfit would be tough.

All-rounder Demi Zanoni top scored with 28, their leading run scorer for the season Tara Martin made 27, and Breanna Smith was not out on 20.

Setts skipper Shania McKinnon, Sarah Telfer and Breanna Bagnall each took a wicket for the home side.

As she had done all season, McKinnon led the way with the bat for Settlers, retiring not out on 40 for the ninth time in the campaign.

Ella Dingwall was also impressive with an unbeaten 35 as their side finished at 2/105 with 11 deliveries remaining.

Martin was the only wicket takers for West while Zanoni affected a run out.
