Top four still in play

THE penultimate round of the Sunraysia Cricket Association Women’s home and away season is here with the top four still to be confirmed.

Gol Gol appear the most likely of any team on the outside able push their way in, but they will have to do so by beating ladder leaders Mildura Settlers this week.

Combined with fourth placed Coomealla Wentworth facing eight-placed Irymple, the odds are stacked against the women in green and gold, but they won’t back down.

They put together an impressive performance to defeat third-placed Nichols Point Gold by nine wickets last, led by a hat-trick from Megan Collihole.

The bowler’s 3/5 takes her to 14 wickets for the season while Abby Collihole and Danika Farmilo claimed two wickets each.

Abby Collihole (22 not out) and Paige McInnes (16 not out) helped lead the run chase home.

Setts didn’t have it all their own way against Mildura East last week making 94, but the bowlers were able to keep their opponents to 85 securing the nine-wicket win.

Brianna Bagnall top scored with 30, while Ella Dingwall made 24 then took 2/5.

A win for Coomealla Wentworth at Henshilwood Oval against the Swallows could secure their place in the postseason.

While they had the bye last week, Katelin Kemp has been outstanding with the bat making 353 runs, Megan Johnston has been in great recent form, while Tauta Rangirua has impressed with the ball.

Airlei Taylor had a great night last week in Irymple’s 12-run loss to Merbein, with a knock of 39 and taking a wicket, while Jo Wood (14 not out) has also led from the front with the bat.

Merbein are still a mathematical possibility of making the top four, but reigning premiers Mildura West are standing in their way at John Hall Oval.

The Magpies were impressive last week with Laylee Trinick retiring on 42 and taking two wickets, while Eden Trinick scored 39 as well.

West had a 126-run win over an understrength Nichols Point Green, Tara Martin and Breanna Smith both unbeaten on 43 and Demi Zanoni 24 retired, while Georgie Cook took 2/4.

Finally it’s a Nichols Point derby between Gold and Green this week in an important effort before finals for the former, and a way to potentially finish the season on a high for the latter who have the bye next week.

Mildura East have the bye this round.
