Trio on pitch for SACA U16s Country Cup

By Peter Argent

THE Merbein cricketing pair of Sam Trinnick and Korban Griffiths, along with Mitchell Munro from the Gol Gol Cricket Club were members of the Murray Districts team in the annual South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) Under 16s Country Cup cricket competition.

Left arm swing bowler Trinnick – who was also the team’s vice-captain – had a primary role as an opening bowler, while Griffiths is also a pace bowler who is skiddy and moves the ball through the air.

Mitch Munro is a leg spinner, who has a wrong’ un and can hold the bat as well.

“Playing that next level about, representative cricket was a great learning experience for the lads,” said Shane Trinnick, a Merbein Cricket Club opening bowling legend and the team coach of the Murray Districts SACA Under 16s side.

“Each held their own at the level and will be better for the experience.

“That game can be won or lost in a very short space of time as our result of Thursday has shown.

“This is the third year we have participants in the South Australian Under 16s Country Cup competition.

“The Oval’s were amazing in the Barossa, but a couple of the decks were a up and down.”

After the Monday fixtures were abandoned due to the heat, the first two rounds were converted to Twenty20 fixtures on Tuesday.

In the opening T20 fixture at Saddleworth Oval the Murray Districts lads bowled first and kept Upper to 6-129.

Trinnick finished with the excellent fixtures of 2-18 from three overs, while

Griffiths only bowled an over and finished with 1-2, while Munro’s pair of overs cost 13 runs for no yield.

The run chase proved fruitless, as Murray Districts top order got bogged down and they finished with 6/89.

Travelling across the floor of the Valley to Angaston for the second game on Tuesday, the Murray Districts batted first on two paced wickets and struggled to 7-55 from their 20 overs.

Munro was stoic with willow in hand with 12 not out from 39 balls faced, dispatching a boundary.

Mid North chased the score down in 10.2 overs of hitting, for the loss of just one wicket.

On Wednesday, the team played at the refurbished Tanunda Oval.

They played Fleurieu & Districts U16 Boys who won the toss and elected to bat making 7-131.

Trinnick sent down seven frugal overs and collecting the figures of 1-19. Griffiths bowled three overs and took 1-14.

Disappointingly the run chase was mediocre, being dismissed for 63 in the 33rd over.

Playing South East at the picturesque Stockwell Oval on Thursday, with scenic views of vineyards their opponents made 145.

Dramatically, the game came down to the second last delivery of the final over.

Number 11 batsman Armaan Singh Khaira attempted to hit a boundary to win, and was caught off a skier, with Munro at the other end on five not out.

Murray Districts’ fell agonizingly three runs short in this run chase.

Team coach Shane Trinnick played in a pair of Australian Country Cricket Championships in 2007 Victorian Country winning team in the Sunraysia and the 2008 in Harrop Park in Mackay and two seasons with Ringwood in the Victorian Premier League.

The 2025 ACCC start at the same venues in the Barossa Valley from January 3.
