Delighted Magpies’ flying start

A TOP three position at this stage of the Sunraysia Cricket Association Premier Women’s season has Merbein co-captain Michelle Griffiths feeling “stoked”.

Currently sitting third with a 4-2 record after seven rounds, only 10 points separates them from reigning premiers Mildura West, while they share the same record as Mildura Settlers.

Setts got the better of an under strength Magpies side last week with a 60-run win, but Griffiths said it has been a great environment in the team fostered by a mix of youth and experience.

Fellow co-captain Eden Trinick, Laylee Trinick, Callie Trinick and Isabelle Forrester have all made selection for the Mallee Murray Suns under-15 girls rep side.

Experienced hands like Griffiths and opening batters Amy Cupper and Natalie Thomas also round out a solid team.

“We’re pretty stoked, especially to have started the year with three straight wins,” Griffiths said.

“We were undermanned against Setts with a few players away which didn’t help us, but overall we’ve been really happy with how the season has come together.

“We do have a great mix of young players coming through and more experienced players, plus we have one new player trying the sport for the first time this season.

“It’s just a group that has a lot of fun out there. We just go out to enjoy ourselves but we are competitive and want to win.

“Obviously we’d love to make it to the grand final. We’re not getting ahead of ourselves, but we want to aim as high as we can.”

Third-placed Merbein take on sixth-placed Gol Gol at Alcheringa Oval on Friday night.

In other contests, ladder leaders Mildura West head to the Mildura Sporting Precinct to take on ninth-placed Mildura East, fourth-placed Nichols Point Gold have an important clash with fifth-placed Coomealla Wentworth at Nichols Point Reserve, while seventh-placed Irymple host second-placed Mildura Settlers at Henshilwood Oval.

Eighth-placed Nichols Point Green has the bye.
