Heat halves T20 season

SHORT format cricket appears to be getting shorter in Sunraysia after the the final round of the men’s Twenty20 competition was cancelled due to heat on Thursday night.

Originally planned to be a four-round competition, just two were played, meaning that Nichols Point and Gol Gol, the only undefeated teams, will now face off in the grand final.

In the women’s competition, which runs on Friday nights, three rounds out of a possible 13 have also been cancelled due to weather, highlighting the poor luck for the short format’s 2023/24 season.

Sunraysia Cricket Association president Mick Thomson said it was unfortunate so many games had been called off, but policies were in place to ensure the safety of players.

“Weather has definitely been the issue. Tonight’s game has been cancelled because of our heat policy, which cuts in at 42 degrees or above,” Thomson said.

“We don’t play so that we can protect the players and umpires.”

Nichols Point and Gol Gol will play off for the Twenty20 title on Thursday at Nichols Point Reserve.

Play is scheduled to begin at 5.30pm.
