Teen’s cup-final ton

AN unbeaten century was an extra special achievement for Colby Marr, who scored 111 runs in a grand final at the Cricket Victoria Country Cup.

Representing the Mallee Murray Suns under 16s team, the 14-year-old helped his team achieve 4/273 against Northern Rivers, the highest score of the tournament up to that point.

But Northern Rivers were able to chase down the total in 48.5 overs with four wickets in hand.

A first-wicket partnership of 133 proved to be a catalyst in the win.

“Scoring 270, I thought we were in with a really good chance of winning, but they batted really well at the start and then some of their other batters came in and contributed nicely, too,” Marr said.

“But, overall, it was a great experience, it was nice staying with all the boys.”

Playing in Hamilton and Greenvale at the two-week long tournament, the Irymple Secondary College student said it was a different climate to what he was used to.

“In Hamilton, we got to stay at Monivae College and get to know all the teams which was really cool … and the next week, we got to stay in Bendigo, which had really good rooms,” Marr said.

“In Hamilton, we had four seasons in one day, but in Greenvale we had ripper weather for cricket.”

At the local level, Marr has played for Nichols Point in both the under 16s and second division this season.

Meanwhile, his step-brother and close rival Joshua Driscoll has played for Mildura West.

As bottom agers, the pair both performed strongly throughout the Cricket Victoria Country Cup, Driscoll with the ball and Marr with the bat.

Although the pair complement each other well when practicing, Marr said both had no reservations when it came to their competitiveness.

“We live in the middle of Mildura, we don’t have that much of a backyard but we’ve got a pool so every time we get home from cricket we just jump in the pool,” Marr said.

“We always play hallway cricket and get in a bit of trouble.

“Sometimes there’s a bit of sledging … just whatever comes to mind.”
