Batting depth boosts West

MILDURA West remains undefeated in the Women’s Kookaburra Association and they’ll be looking to make it six wins in a row when they meet Irymple this weekend.

It’s been an impressive team display by West who have seen five individual batters retire not out across five games.

Coach Jason Bell highlighted the importance of everyone in the team playing their role.

“They’re going quite well, continuing to improve week by week which is one of the things we set out to do at the start of the year,” he said.

“We’re quite lucky to have some girls that have been batting quite well, we don’t want to in any way be reliant on one or two people at the crease so we’re trying to spread that load as much as we possibly can.

“There’s been no huge standouts, everyone is just chipping in and doing their part.”

Bell said his team wouldn’t be taking their game against the seventh placed Irymple lightly.

“We give each game equal amount of thought, it’s about putting things in place for girls to achieve each week, it’s about doing things that we can control and can’t control,” he said.

In contrast to West, Settlers batter Shania McKinnon has so far shown to be a one-person wrecking ball for her team.

McKinnon has taken to the crease four times and retired not out on three of those occasions, helping Settlers to a record of 3-2.

In what should be the game of the round, Settlers (third) will meet Coomealla Point (fourth) who have also won three games for the season.

Five rounds in, Coomealla Point have taken 33 wickets as a team which is equal highest, alongside Mildura West.

Mildura East will be looking to cement second place when they come up against Merbein.

East have scored 550 runs as a team so far, more than anyone else in the competition.

Sitting in fifth position, a win for Merbein would go a long way for their finals aspirations.

Lastly, Gol Gol will be hungry for their first win against Nichols Point.

Both teams find themselves near the bottom of the standings, but a win for either side would be a confidence booster as we near the half-way point of the season.
