Thomson impresses as batsmen sizzle

THERE was plenty of good batting on display in the Sunraysia Cricket Association this weekend as three teams scored more than 200 runs in day one of round three.

Against Gol Gol, Irymple Captain Mark Thomson fell just short of a century, finishing on 93 runs as he led his team to total of 242.

Thomson said he was happy with how his team played but admitted they would need to be on their game when they bowl the following week.

“They’re probably the best batting team in the competition so we’ll need to show up,” he said.

“It was good to get a few under my belt after a pretty lean start to the year, it’s a nice place to bat, a flat wicket and a quick outfield, you get value for your shots.”

David Fillipi added 40 runs, while four other players scored in the 20s in what will be a difficult chase for Gol Gol next weekend.

Despite the onslaught of runs, Shacaya Thomas finished with 5/92 and bowled an outrageous 38.5 overs for the home side unchanged at one end.

Meanwhile, at the Mildura Sporting Precinct, Coomealla Wentworth were bowled out by Mildura East in 66 overs.

Colby Wade was the standout with 65 runs off 137 balls while six players failed to score in double figures en route to the team’s final score of 196.

Thomas Vadlja was the most economical for Mildura East, finishing with figures of 3/34 which included five maidens.

East were sent in to bat for 11 overs and were 1/36 at stumps, import Josh Andrews bowled out for seven by Bevan Wade.

Settlers will have their work cut out for them next weekend, after Mildura West posted a monster score of 7/269.

Lower order batsman Taj Hill made 70 runs off 65 balls, which included 10 fours, while Kian Burns remained unbeaten on 53 and opener Joshua Driscoll added 56.

Two hundred and sixty nine is the highest score posted so far this season.

At Chaffey Park, Nichols Point had solid contributors across the board as they recorded a solid 7/225 against Merbein.

Oliver Murray smashed eight fours and scored 53 runs, while Shane Bowen was rock solid for visitors and finished unbeaten on 45 runs off 137 balls.

Shane Trinick claimed 3/62 for Merbein off 19 overs.
