Setts salute 400-game veteran

MILDURA Settlers Cricket Club will acknowledge the tireless work and dedication of life member John Bergin on Saturday.

The 53-year-old celebrated 400 senior games for his beloved club in October and has held almost every position at the club across almost four decades.

Saturday’s event, at the Mildura Senior College clubrooms following the conclusion of the First Division contest against Merbein, will double as premiership reunions for the 1982/83 and 2002/03 Second Division, and 2012/13 First Division sides.

Two new life members of Mildura Settlers will also be inducted.

Wicket-keeper batsman Bergin has done it all both on and off the field for the club, and president Greg Schultz said the man known as ‘Dirk’ had made “an immense impact”.

“He has been an inspiration to everyone,” Schultz said.

“He’s played senior cricket all the way from firsts to fourths and he’s done everything possible both on and off the field.

“He is a tireless worker and always supporting others, especially when to comes to the juniors, and he was club treasurer for at least 15 years.”
