Teen’s cameo lifts Pointers

A CHRIS Williams century wasn’t enough for Mildura West to make it past Nichols Point in the final round of Sunraysia Cricket Association for 2022.

A top all-round performance from Riley Jobson, a talented former junior who currently plays for Maroochydore, helped the Pointers to a 17-run win and remain in third place heading into the Christmas break.

The 16-year-old top scored with 58 and nabbed 4/49 for the home side in the first of his two games back at the club before heading back to Queensland in the new year.

Jobson was well supported with the bat by skipper Shawn Mathews (49) and Glen Bridson (42) as they reached 8/227 from their 40 overs. West’s Shane Driscoll led the bowling with 3/33.

With the bat, Williams was a one-man wrecking crew for West, finishing on 107 from 85 deliveries, with eight boundaries and two sixes.

The former Innes Medal winner didn’t get the required support from his batting partners, Joe Fleri the next highest scorer with 19.

Jobson took three of the last four wickets to restrict West to 9/210 after their 40 overs. Mathews and Jack Norton each grabbed two wickets as well.

In other games, Coomealla Wentworth held off Mildura East for a heart-stopping one-run win at Brian Weightman Oval.

Set 154 to win, East finished their 40 overs at 9/152, the Blues’ death bowling doing enough to deny the home side an important victory.

Coomy import Nafis Shaikh continued his great batting form with his 41 steadying the ship after the loss of two early wickets. Bevan Wade also chimed in with a lower order 32.

Tom Vadlja and Mark and Zane Hunt all grabbed two wickets each.

East also lost early scalps, but the experience of Vadlja (48) and Andrew Ross (36) kept them in the contest and almost getting across the line.

Wade and Jake Wright each took two wickets for the Blues.

A 145-run partnership between Adian Calarco and Wade Hancock was the catalyst for Gol Gol’s 58-run win over Mildura Settlers at the Senior College.

Hancock’s 85 not out and 73 from Calarco got the NSW side to 3/204 from their 40 overs. Hancock has now scored 239 runs in his past two innings without being dismissed.

Setts import Harvey Ault started his strong all-round day with 2/38, before he also led the way with the bat.

The 21-year-old from Stoke top scored with 46 from 44 deliveries as Setts were held to 7/146, with Keegan MacDonald (35) and Cameron Kiel (33) also playing solid hands.

Following a rare early dismissal with the bat, Shac Thomas kept himself in the game, taking 3/30, taking him to 19 wickets for the season.

Irymple wasted little time in securing a 10-wicket victory over Merbein at Henshilwood Oval, chasing down their target of 81 in just 8.4 overs.

Skipper Mark Thomson (45 from 36) and a returning Bryson Lush (31 from 24) made sure no other batters left the dugout as the second-placed Swallows did what was necessary.

Earlier, Billy Phelan starred with the ball, taking 3/7 from his eight overs, including five maidens. Chase Stone and Bailey Anderson each grabbed two wickets as the Magpies were dismissed for 80.

Josh Stanley (17), Jarrod Forrester (16 not out) and Angus Lang (13) were the only batters to reach double figures.

SCA cricket takes a break over Christmas. Matches start on Saturday, January 7.
