Runs flow for Magpies

MERBEIN captain Tara Martin is hoping her side can maintain their momentum from their start to the SCA Premier Women’s campaign.

After the rain-affected start to the season, the Magpies have emerged with strong wins over Coomealla Wentworth and Irymple in their completed matches to sit top of the table.

While Merbein has the bye on Friday, Martin said the team was pleased with how they had started the season.

“We’ve definitely had luck on our side that everyone has been on their A game at the same time, and hopefully we can keep that going after the bye,” she said.

“Those early wins will be handy, especially in trying to get that extra percentage on the board as the season goes on.”

The skipper has led the way with the ball, taking five wickets across the two games to sit equal with Nichols Point’s Tatiana Kirirua-Gill on top of the table.

Martin also sung the praise of juniors Eden Trinick, Laylee Trinick and Isabella Forrester, who have stepped up to support the bowling unit.

“We haven’t got a lot of bowlers in the side so we’ve asked a bit of them so far and they’ve done really well,” she said.

“Our strength is definitely our batting, and to have Carrie Barlow, Gemma Thomas, Natalie Thomas and Steph Neaylon all retire (after 30 runs) across the first few games has been great.”

Merbein will face Gol Gol at Chaffey Park next week.

In Friday night’s games, Gol Gol are at home to Nichols Point Gold at Alcheringa, Mildura East host Irymple at Brian Weightman Oval, Mildura Settlers are facing Nichols Point Green at Mildura Senior College and Coomealla Wentworth take on Mildura West at George Gordon Oval.
