Settlers notch up half a Century

THE Mildura Settlers Cricket Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary over the long weekend in March.

Thousands of cricketers have played with or against ‘Setts’ over the past five decades and all are welcome to celebrate the anniversary, starting on Friday, March 11, with a barbecue at the Mildura Senior College.

This will be followed on the Saturday with three games of cricket against Mildura West from 1pm, with an afternoon tea at 3.30pm. The major celebration will be held from 7pm at the Mildura Settlers CC pavillion. Cost of the weekend is $100 which includes all meals, a report and stubby holder.

The weekend will conclude on the Sunday with a barbecue at the Mildura Golf Club from 12pm. All are welcome and further information can be obtained from Peter Shadwick on 0407 214 911.

Over the 50 years of involvement with Sunraysia Cricket, Mildura Settlers have won 55 senior premierships throughout the grades, including 13 first division flags with the inaugural first division premiership in 1977-78.

Settlers has a proud and successful history both on and off the field. It was born out of the amalgamation of the Mildura Cricket Club and the Settlers Cricket Club.

Mildura Settlers Cricket Club was formed on the 16th August 1971 and entered teams in four divisions in its inaugural 1971/72 season resulting in the third and fourth division premierships.

Without a permanent home, training was shared between the Aero ovals and the No. 3 oval nets with games being played at the now Brian Weightman Oval.

In 1975, Mildura Settlers began the move to their home at the Mildura High School with the installation of a turf wicket, erection of training nets and their new clubrooms.

A roller was purchased in 1977 and the Mildura High School became the new home of Mildura Settlers Cricket Club. Over the years, the club has improved its facilities with the establishment of the legendary shed and future development of the sporting club to have one of the best cricket facilities in country Victoria.
