SFNL season crisis: SCA willing to consider delay

THE Sunraysia Cricket Association (SCA) says it is “willing to consider” delaying the start of its 2021-22 competition if local football and netball bosses want to extend their stop-start season beyond September.

SCA president Mick Thomson said local cricket was scheduled to begin on the first weekend of October.

However, he said that if the Sunraysia Football and Netball League (SFNL) asked the SCA for a delay, “we’ll sit down and discuss it”.

“But if we move our season back, it will put immense pressure on the SCA,” Mr Thomson said.

“If we shorten our season, it will put us in the position they are in now, so we get squeezed.

“But, having said that, we’d be willing to take a look at it and see if there’s a solution to the problem.”

SFNL president Paul Matheson said “all options are on the table” as the league pondered how to complete the season in COVID-crippling times.

“The issue will be how long the clubs and players want our season to run for,” Mr Matheson said on Sunday.

“A longer season could be a good option for the juniors, where we could get them to play whenever we can.

“It’s not easy to plan for anything at the moment, but I’m open to any discussion and the league will be driven by what the member clubs want to do.”

An agreement between AFL Victoria and Cricket Victoria delayed last year’s SCA season start until late October.

However, Mr Thomson said there were no high-level talks at this stage to make changes to 2021 regional cricket fixtures.
