New SCA coaching role for Mathews

SHAUN Mathews is excited to take on the new role of Sunraysia Cricket Association (SCA) Junior Director of Coaching for the 2021-22 season.

The newly created position is being developed in partnership between the SCA and Cricket Victoria and aims to improve the standards of local coaching with seminars and targeted approaches to skill development at a local level.

Mathews is a Level 2 qualified coach and has been a coach at Youth Premier League level for the past four years.

The current Nichols Point Cricket Club first division co-coach is hoping to bring a wealth of experience to the role.

“I am very excited the SCA and Cricket Victoria have made this a position as I know it will be something junior coaches will relish,” he said.

“Being able to give assistance to coaches who are usually time poor parents, with skill work, training structures, talent spotting, game-day assistance and general upskilling is something I’m looking forward to.

“With most juniors training running on Thursday nights, it will make it tricky being able to attend both training nights senior coaching Nichols Point, but the club and I are in lucky enough position to have a premiership winning coach in Brad Thomas who will be taking on a joint coaching role.”

On a recent Facebook post announcing the appointment, the SCA said it was “looking forward to this exciting initiative and the further development of the local junior competition”.
