Name change heralds new era at Gol Gol

WORKERS Gol Gol Cricket Club is no more, with the Sunraysia Cricket Association (SCA) team now going simply by Gol Gol Cricket Club.

President Daron Hulls said the decision was in line with the future vision of the club and community, but is still aiming to hold on to the history.

The Workers and Alcheringa cricket clubs merged in the late 1990s and the club has been a powerhouse across senior, junior and women’s grades for the past couple of decades.

With the continued growth of the Gol Gol community, Hulls said it was time for the club make a new name for itself.

“The decision from the committee is based around the future vision we have for the club and the growth of the Gol Gol community,” he said.

“It’s an area that is expanding and there is a really strong junior base form nnder-10 level upwards with a lot of new people coming to the area.

“We’re also not losing the history of the club. It’s something we want to maintain and keep as part of our identity.”

Hulls said life members and previous stakeholders of the club were consulted during the process and the decision was voted in unanimously at the club’s recent AGM.

“I think the long-term vision is to incorporate all the sporting clubs under one sporting banner, so to have the footy, netball and cricket together, and potentially other sports as well,” he said.

“We thought the name change would align with this future vision.

“We have to understand the importance of not taking away from our history and that foundation remains and we will continue to move forward.”

Perpetual trophies that bear the names of Workers, Alcheringa and Workers Gol Gol players will remain in place, and Workers Gol Gol will still be represented on the club uniform.

Vice-president and First Division all-rounder Nick Jensen said the updated club logo was still in the design process.

“As a club we want to move forward with more of our demographic coming over to this side of the bridge,” he said.

“Most of the existing Workers guys were all on board with the change, and Workers Gol Gol will still have place at the club and will be represented on our uniforms.

“The playing uniforms will be similar in terms of colours with the green, yellow and black, and we’re currently working through the new design of the club logo.

“Not too much will change underneath and the club itself will be pretty much the same.”
