Local cricket snippets: Morrison back to his best

IT was vintage Jason Morrison on Saturday against Mildura East at Brian Weightman Oval.

The heavy-hitting opener blasted 116 from 82 balls, with eight fours and nine sixes.

One Zane Hunt over pretty well summed up peak Morrison and brought back memories of his double ton a couple of years back against Merbein South.

A dot ball to open was followed by five consecutive sixes, and young Hunt was likely happy to be taken out of the attack afterwards.

For the record, Setts finished their 40 overs at 1/247.

Pointers shut down South

FROM destructive batting to miserly bowling, Nichols Point absolutely locked down Merbein South during the middle overs of their comfortable win at Chaffey Park.

When Saints opener Brady Moore was dismissed on the last ball of the 20th over by debutant Lewis Dichiera no runs came off the bat until the third ball of the 24th over.

In that time Dichiera bowled a maiden and coach Shaun Mathews bowled two.

One bye came off Mathews’ second over, the only time in his first six that the scoreboard ticked over.

After six overs the Pointers coach’s figures were 3/0, finishing at 4/1 from eight overs and well and truly putting the brakes on what was already a slowish start with the bat for the Saints.

Ton goes begging for ‘Staff’

AND the award for the unluckiest bloke in Sunraysia cricket this week goes to Workers Gol Gol Second Division cricketer Luke Stafford.

Well known as a bit of a character, “Staff” was sitting on a career-best according to MyCricket – 99 from 120 balls against Coomealla Wentworth.

Needing a single with plenty of time left to notch triple figures instead he offered a catch to Jordan Wade off the bowling of Blues bowler Marcus Parker and was back in the sheds.

Cricket can be cruel sometimes.

Well, that didn’t take long

AND a candidate for the shortest completed match in the country for this season goes to South West v Nursery Ridge in Red Cliffs A Grade on Saturday.

With the innings’ already shortened to 25 overs due to a wet pitch, Nursery Ridge sent in their winless opponents.

A mere 10.4 overs later, South West were all out for 15 with extras the top scorer on four.

Former Hobart Hurricanes and Victoria cricketer Jake Reed did the bulk of the damage with 4/8 from five overs while the evergreen Jason Finch took 3/7 from five.

Nursery Ridge took just 19 balls to pass South West’s total with Joel Finch not out on seven and Mitch Shaw at the other end on five. Overall, the match lasted one ball short of 14 overs, with playing time a mere two hours and one minute.
