Saturday Serve: Cricket Australia must stand firm on Brisbane Test

DON’T let the tail wag the dog.

That’s an old adage, apt now as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tries to prevent Brisbane from hosting the fourth Test between Australia and their national team.

The BCCI has long been a bully boy in international cricket, initially refusing to use the decision review system and generally stomping their feet and declaring “it’s our way or the highway” on a range of issues.

Plans for the fourth Test at the Gabba were ticked off by both the BCCI and Queensland Health on December 29 and CA maintains that it has not heard anything from their counterparts.

However, reports have now emerged India doesn’t want to play there despite the agreed upon biosecurity protocols being identical for the Sydney Test, which is currently underway.

Understandably, there’s a lot more happening behind the scenes in this new COVID-world, but – barring some public health emergency as was threatened with Sydney – you can’t have a team dictating where it plays.

If these reports ring true, what is India’s solution? Play the next Test in Delhi?

Cricket Australia needs to stand up and ensure the Test goes ahead as planned in Brisbane.

A lot of hard work has gone in to ensure we are even able to have sporting events of this magnitude.

We can’t let all that work go to waste at the behest of an organisation that too readily seems to want to be in charge.
