Runfest on way

WORKERS Gol Gol captain-coach Adam Thomson expects plenty of runs to be on the table at Alcheringa Oval in his side’s Sunraysia Cricket Association First Division clash with Mildura West today.

He said with one-day matches being a real test of a side’s bowling depth, the wicket presented today will be a challenge for the fielding side.

“The wicket looks very flat out there so expect a high-scoring game,” Thomson said.

Missing two key players with the ball in Matt Cameron and Nick Jensen, Thomson will need to find some more bowling against a Mildura West side who have been dangerous at times this year.

Former West captain-coach Chris Williams has led the charge but is finding more support these days.

“Willo’s been in super form … we definitely need to get him early, Ben Hallam is a danger and their coach Davison Mbindi,” he said.

“They’ve got more batting depth than in recent years. I think it’s going to be fairly high scoring, so it’s a danger game for us.”

In a boost for Workers Gol Gol, Riverland-based Jake Albrecht is back.

“The borders have opened so it will be good to have him,” Thomson said.

“Lauchy Wade, hopefully he can step up a bit, Muhammad Haidry is still there and Hayden Carroll will come back in as a spin option without Jensen.”

Workers Gol Gol also hand a debut to young all-rounder Vaughan McClure, who has averaged 28 with the bat and five with the ball in the Second Division this year.

West come into the game fifth on the ladder and despite losing to a firing Mildura Settlers last time out, have strung some good games together.

Rhiann O’Donnell has been named after a brilliant 97 off 95 in Victorian Premier Cricket Women’s First Division last weekend and helps bolster the side’s middle order.
