Juniors Player Of The Week: Newey’s knock one for the ages

RED Cliffs junior cricketer Rylan Newey certainly led from the front in his side’s big win over Mildura Settlers in 14-and-under Division 2 cricket at the weekend.

The side’s captain and star opening bat dominated the bowling with a big knock of 93 – believed to be the highest score ever in SCA under 14s cricket – to ensure his side got the points.

Under junior rules he retired upon reaching 50, with the score 5/82 and Red Cliffs still needing 18 runs to draw level with Settlers’ score of 100.

He was able to return after the fall of the ninth wicket, scoring his next 43 runs in a 67-run stand with Noah Ziguras (26 not out) to eventually be the last wicket to fall.

Red Cliffs were all out for 181 and claimed victory.

Red Cliffs sit second on the ladder now going into semi-finals this weekend.

While still a junior Newey has been playing senior cricket for a number of years now.

He debuted for South West in the Red Cliffs Cricket Association B Grade in 2016-17, playing a game of A Grade cricket the following year.

He has mostly played B grade in subsequent seasons with the odd A Grade appearance.

This season he has played six A Grade games to go with eight B grade games.

As the Sportspower Mildura Juniors Player Of The Week Newey receives a $20 voucher donated by Sportspower in recognition of his performance.
