Sunraysia girls cricket side ready for Western Victoria Cup

SUNRAYSIA junior girls cricketers had their final training session on Monday afternoon ahead of the Under 13 Western Victoria Cup in Hamilton next week.

The all-star team was picked from across the Sunraysia Cricket Association (SCA) under-14 girls’ competition and will travel this weekend in preparation for playing from Monday through until Wednesday.

SCA president Andrew Farlie said he was pleased the team would have the opportunity to compete in the cup.

“(The cup) fits in well with what we have done with our under-14 girls’ competition this summer,” Farlie said.

“It is the first time we have run the competition and this just gives them another step where they can represent the association.”

Five rounds will be played across the three days for the Twenty20 competition against five other regional cricket associations.

The team haven’t had too much time training together over the holiday period but Farlie said he was still confident they would give it a good go.

“It’s the first time we are heading down there, not really sure what to expect,” he said.

“I think we will be pretty good – a lot of these competitions are just starting up in the girls and I think we will go all right.

“We have some really talented girls in the group so I think we will go really well.”

The team will face Grassmere Cricket Association first before battling it out against Colac, Hamilton and Warrnambool in the hope of making the final.

Farlie said the girls were eager to get down to Hamilton and compete.

“The girls are really excited,” he said.

“It is always good to get away and it’s not always just about the cricket –  it should be pretty good fun.”
