Local stars in Under 19 National Cricket Championships semi

VICTORIA Country and Victoria Metro will face off in a semi-final of the Under 19 National Cricket Championships in Perth on Wednesday with a strong Sunraysia flavour.

Representing the country boys will be Kobe Smith, the former Coomealla Wentworth fast bowler, who now plies his trade with Fitzroy-Doncaster in Victorian Premier Cricket.

In the metro side, as captain, Monash Tigers all-rounder Wil Parker will be a key player.

Parker is the grandson of Sunraysia sporting icon Brian Weightman, the man whose name City Oval now carries.

His mother is Nyree Parker (nee Weightman) while uncle Dale is a former Richmond Football Club champion.

Victoria Metro finished top in Pool B of the tournament’s minor round with six wins from six games, while the country side was second in Pool A with four wins and two losses behind top side New South Wales Metro, who dropped just the one game.

Parker has 121 runs at an average of 24.20 for the tournament, while opening bowler Smith has four wickets at 23.25.
