Sunraysia Cricket Association Round 10 highlights: Irymple bats make hay

Irymple 318 d Nichols Point 81, 3/99

IRYMPLE’S decision to bat on was rewarded with 318 on the second day of their two-day match against Nichols Point.

The Swallows had already scored first innings points on the opening day’s play after dismissing Nichols Point for 81 and then scored 1/126.

Some thought captain Jordan Payne may press for an outright win, but instead he batted on.

Billy Phelan top-scored for the Swallows with a solid 72.

Payne provided good support with 53, while Jarrad Armsden (63), Mitch Roads (51) and Mark Thomson (58) also helped themselves to runs.

In their second innings Nichols Point were 3/99 at the close of play.

It was a disappointing match for the Pointers, who were out to prove they could mix it with the top sides in the competition.

They will now need to regroup as they prepare to face another top-four side, Workers Gol Gol, who are coming off a big win over Mildura East.

Merbein South 171 d Coomealla Wentworth 165

MERBEIN South scored their third win of the season, defeating Coomealla Wentworth in a close contest at Chaffey Park.

It was an impressive performance by the Saints, who have shown good signs this season.

Cameron Grimwood was the standout performer for the home side, capturing 4/55 off 24 overs.

With only 171 runs to defend, Merbein South needed to bowl and field well and it was Grimwood who stepped up.
Introduced into the attack as first change, Grimwood bowled

11 maidens in an impressive spell.

Veteran paceman Shane Trinick was also a great contributor and, although he claimed only one wicket, his 15 overs conceded just 16 runs as he continued his fine form this season.

Matt Job was the best of the Coomealla Wentworth batsmen with 35 as the visitors finished the day’s play on 165, six short of their target.

Workers Gol Gol 4/372 d Mildura East 4/140

ON a day that provided few highlights, Mildura East clawed their way to 4/140 in reply to Workers Gol Gol’s first innings total of 4/372.

Scoring at less than two runs an over, Mildura East were more focused on preserving wickets than chasing the win.

Captain Josh Berry was the pick of the Mildura East batsmen, finishing with 42.

Berry worked hard at the top of the order and, with Lochlan Symes (35), put on 67 for the opening stand.

But neither batsman was able to get on top of the Workers attack, who toiled hard all day in a match where only eight wickets fell.
