Sunraysia Cricket Association rounds 4 and 5 reports

Workers Gol Gol 3/125 d Irymple 8/124

A FOUR-wicket haul from Jake Albrecht and solid contributions across the board from their batsman allowed Workers Gol Gol to claim victory in the last over against Irymple at Alcheringa Oval and retake top spot on the SCA First Division ladder.

The Swallows batted first after winning the toss and an 88-run second-wicket partnership between Jordan Payne (54 off 52 ball, three fours) and Jarrad Armsden (51 off 43 balls, seven fours) helped set up the competitive total of 8/124.

Albrecht claimed 4/22 off his four overs to be best for Workers with the ball while Matthew Cameron chipped in with 2/20.

Opener Shacaya Thomas belted 16 off as many balls before falling with the score on 19, but Workers were never really troubled from there as Tyson Adamson (26), Aidan Calarco (26 not out), Nick Jensen (23 not out) and Adam Thomson (20) all contributed strongly.

Despite the loss, Irymple maintain second spot on the ladder.

Coomealla Wentworth 4/120 d Mildura East 6/110

AFTER winning the toss and batting, Coomealla Wentworth set about compiling a competitive 4/120 off their 20 overs at their home ground.

Despite losing Tom Douglas (4) with the score at 13, Coomealla got some solid contributions from their top order with Matt Job (39), Darby McLean (26), Bevan Wade (23) and Justin Freeman (19 not out off seven balls).

Vick Singh was the pick of East’s bowlers taking 2/26 off four overs while Jayden Hunt and Baljinder Sandhu took one wicket each.

East lost two early wickets to be 2/22 before Andrew Ross (41 not out off 45 balls) and Josh Berry (26) set about trying to chase down the total.

But when Berry fell with the score on 79, East’s middle order crumbled and they fell 10 runs short, finishing 6/110 off their 20 overs.

Wade was outstanding with the ball taking 3/21 off his four overs while Michael Hilliard and Freeman took one wicket each.

Mildura West 8/109 d Merbein South 7/92

MILDURA West got their first win of the season in a closely fought match against Merbein South at Chaffey Park.

Batting first, West compiled 8/109 off their 20 overs with top-order batsmen Chris Williams (28), Will Parsons (22), Ben Hallam (19) and Shane Driscoll (17) all getting starts.

Shane Trinick snared 3/18 off his four overs while Cameron Grimwood (2/14) and Tony Trinick (2/25) were also tidy.

In reply, Merbein South were never able to get going, losing wickets at regular intervals and only Shane Trinick’s 32 off 27 balls and Sashika Fernando’s 17 offered any real resistance in the team’s 7/92.

Aaron Feroz took 3/18 while Williams, Thanura Rajapaske and Lachlan Thornton took one wicket each.

Mildura Settlers 6/129 d Nichols Point 6/109

AFTER starting the season with three straight victories – including against last season’s runners-up Workers Gol Gol – Nichols Point dropped consecutive games in rounds 4 and 5.

Up against the premiers in their second game of the weekend, the Pointers fell 20 runs short chasing Settlers’ 6/129.

Settlers won the toss and batted at Mildura Senior College and thanks to some lusty hitting from Braidyn Turner (47 off 30 balls including four fours and one six) and a cameo unbeaten 20 off 13 balls at the end of the innings from Mark Cleary, reached 6/129 off their 20 overs.

Carmine Cavallaro and Shaun Mathews took two wickets apiece for the Pointers.

In reply, Nichols Point lost Dale Chappell (8) early to be 1/9 in their chase but Brad Thomas (48 off 47 balls), Kaushik Aphale (17) and Mathews (12) kept them in the hunt.

Two late run-outs ended any hope of Nichols Point chasing down the runs.

Four bowlers took a wicket each for Settlers.

Irymple 5/101 d Nichols Point 6/100

Nichols Point won the toss and batted at Henshilwood Reserve but were on the back foot from the outset when opener Brad Thomas (3), Kaushik Aphale (2) and Shaun Mathews (1) all went cheaply, the Pointers slumping to 3/22.

Opener Dale Chappell (29), Dean Fulco (23 not out) and Tyson Giles (25) helped steady the ship somewhat as Nichols Point reached 6/100 after their allotted 20 overs.

The wickets were shared among the five Irymple bowlers with Bailey Anderson (1/7) and Dean Fairlie (1/12) from their four overs the most economical.

When Aphale bowled Riley Payne (1) to have the Swallows 1/6, it looked like Nichols Point could put some pressure on the home side, but it wasn’t to be as opener Bryson Lush and Jordan Payne put on 49 for the second wicket.

Lush smacked seven boundaries in his 35 (off 26 balls) while Payne (27 off 43) and Jarrad Armsden (23 off 21) helped ease Irymple to victory.

\William Liddle was the pick of the Pointers bowlers with 3/24 while Aphale took 1/8.

Mildura Settlers 9/111 d Mildura West 4/98

A Mark Cleary masterclass with bat and ball was the difference between the two sides as Setts continued their winning ways to open the SCA season.

Batting first, Settlers made 9/111 in their dig at Mildura Senior College with Cleary belting 55 off 41 balls, including nine fours, with opener Patrick Keogh (10) the only other batsman in double figures.

Aaron Feroz was outstanding with the ball taking 3/17 off his four overs while Shane Driscoll and Chris Williams took two wickets apiece.

Cleary then claimed 2/16 off four overs to help Setts claim what looked an unlikely victory after Ben Hallam (42 not out off 62 balls) and Driscoll (28) put on 54 for the first wicket.

Merbein South 94 d Coomealla Wentworth 73

Merbein South got their first win of the season with a hard-fought result over Coomealla Wentworth at Coomealla.

Merbein were sent in to bat and, despite losing wickets at regular intervals, were able to put 94 on the board from their 20 overs with Josh Carmichael (21) and some late big-hitting from Darius Modoo-Loy (21 off 10 balls) the best of the batsmen.

Zac Hancock (4/22 off three overs) and Liam Freeman (3/21 off four) were the pick of the bowlers for Coomealla.

After losing opener Tom Douglas (1) early, it looked like the home side might be able to chase down the target but when Luke Cullinan (5) fell with the score on 30, Coomealla couldn’t string another decent partnership together and were bowled out for 73 in the 20th over.

Carmichael topped off a good game with 3/15 and Shane Trinick and Campbell Griffiths took two wickets each.

Workers Gol Gol 4/145 d Mildura East 7/117

An outstanding 75 from 60 balls, featuring seven fours and three sixes, from Aidan Calarco was the catalyst for Workers’ big victory over Mildura East at Alcheringa Oval.

Workers lost opener Shacaya Thomas to a first-ball duck and slumped to 2/17 when Ben McPhee (11) was dismissed early but the innings got back on track with Adam Thomson (19 off 21 balls) and Nick Jensen (24 not out off 25 balls) giving Calarco good support.Mildura East used seven bowlers with Jayden  Hunt and Jhy Berry both taking 1/11.

Josh (30 off 37 balls) and Jhy Berry (33 off 31) got East’s innings off to a fine start, putting on 63 for the opening wicket but the middle order was not able to keep the pressure on as regular wickets fell and they could only manage 7/117 off their 20 overs.

Thomas was the best of the Workers’ bowlers with 3/23 off four overs.
