Veterans to the fore at Willowfest event

THE Willowfest Veterans Cricket Championships wrapped up in the region yesterday.

In the Over 60s section, Victoria Blue were the Division 1 champions and Hamilton the Division 2 victors.

A Willowfest XI featuring some local names took part in Division 2. In the Over 70s, Victoria were the winners.

Earlier in the week, the Victoria 1 team took out the Over 50s that wrapped up on Monday.

Sunraysia had two teams in this grade, with Sunraysia Gold in second with two wins and Sunraysia Green third – having tied with the eventual winners in their match and winning their other game.

For Sunraysia Green Workers, Gol Gol’s Andrew Banks scored 42 retired and Nichols Point’s Dave Hogarth made 40 retired against Victoria, while with the ball former Mildura West paceman Stewart Hallam and Coomealla Wentworth’s Mark Cullinan took two wickets apiece.

In the Green team’s win, over South Australia, Hallam claimed four wickets with Settlers’ Andrew Myers taking three.

Fellow Settler Julian Maloney made 35 to show he’s not lost much at all with the bat.

Sunraysia Gold’s wins came against Victoria Saxons and the Australian Capital Territory Firebirds.

Against the Firebirds John Mihaljevic claimed five wickets in a dominant display while Nichols Point teammate John Mensforth hit 40 retired. Merbein South’s Mark White made 43 retired with Irymple’s Brendan Payne 30 unbeaten.

Against the Saxons, White had his turn with the ball, taking a pair of scalps, and South West’s Justin MacFarlane top scored with 43.
