VICTORIAN residents will no longer be able to cross into South Australia from August 21 under harsh new restrictions enforced by the South Australian Government.
Victorians living in towns such as Murrayville and Lindsay Point, within 50km of the South Australian border, could cross into border communities in South Australia as long as they had regular coronavirus checks.
From Friday next week those people will have to be approved as an essential traveller or will not be allowed across.
There will be some exceptions, including Year 11 and 12 students and farmers whose properties span the border.
South Australian Police Commissioner and state COVID-19 co-ordinator Grant Stevens said the rising numbers of coronavirus cases in Victoria — and in border-area towns such as Horsham and Portland — had prompted the new rules.
Mr Stevens said there was an opportunity for other exemptions to be granted for health reasons based on individual circumstances.
The announcement came as SA Health announced no new cases on Wednesday – the fifth consecutive day of zero daily patients.
There are six active, or infectious coronavirus patients in SA and the state has recorded 459 total cases with four deaths.
