Cupper: NSW-Victoria border closure causes ‘significant angst’

MEMBER for Mildura Ali Cupper wants “unrestricted access” for Sunraysia communities on both sides of the border between New South Wales and Victoria as soon as possible.

Ms Cupper issued a statement on Monday after a border closure, to take effect Tuesday night, was announced.

She said the closure would cause “significant anxiety for people in communities on both sides of the Murray”.

“People on both sides of the river regularly travel across the border as part of their daily lives,” Ms Cupper said.

“A permit process has been announced and it is imperative the NSW and Victorian governments ensure as soon as possible that unrestricted access will be granted for our communities.

“People will need to be patient over the next few days as the online permits are processed but I would urge everyone who needs access across the border to apply via the www.service.nsw.gov.au website.

“It is disappointing the NSW Government has been considering the border closure for some time, but has enacted it without ensuring the permit process was already in place.

“It is also disappointing the NSW Government did not contact my office on such an important decision.

“I have today written to Premier Berejiklian and Premier Andrews to outline the potential impacts the border closure will have on our region and the significant angst it is causing.

“I have also implored Premier Berejiklian, and her government, to ensure the border closure only remains in place for the shortest possible time and that there be better communication and forward planning in the event any further measures are needed.”
