AS Sunraysia is hit by another surge in COVID-19 cases, Mildura's state MP is asking people to wear masks in public places to help curb the spread of the virus, flus, colds, and other sicknesses.

In a statement released on Wednesday, independent Member for Mildura Ali Cupper said that "wearing a mask is not a big deal, and we need to use all the tools in our toolbelt to help protect our most vulnerable".

"Not only that, but wearing a mask in public indoor settings is the least we can do for our hardworking healthcare staff, who continue to work in stressful and exhausting circumstances," she said.

Ms Cupper said the Mildura local government area had recorded close to 19,000 cases of COVID-19 over the course of the pandemic, and more than 100 new cases a day for the last ten days running.

According to Victoria's official COVID statistics, 145 new Mildura cases had been recorded in the 24 hours up to 10.30am on Wednesday, for a total of 849 active cases.

The Victorian Government has resisted medical suggestions to reintroduce mask mandates in the current surge, but has recommended mask use in schools and high-density environments.

Ms Cupper said Mildura also had the second-lowest rate of third-dose COVID vaccination of any regional LGA in Victoria.

"We're seeing staff shortages run through almost every office and business in our region because of the high rate of sickness, and the more we can do to protect each other, the better," she said.

"We always celebrate volunteering, and wearing a mask is the easiest volunteering you can do.

"I'm asking for individuals and businesses to take personal and organisational responsibility. The best way to protect ourselves, our families, our small businesses and our economy is to prevent the spread."
