Saddle up! Pony rides are coming to Jaycee Park

JAYCEE Park will soon be visited by a herd of horses and ponies from the Mildura Horse Riding School.

The town's only large scale riding school, it was founded in 2020 by experienced horse rider and competitor Megan Jackmann to help educate riders of all ages and experience levels.

Pony rides were first introduced in 2023 as part of broader events such as the Mildura Harness Racing Club's annual cup night.

"It's a good activity for the kids, they can go and enjoy an experience being around a horse," Ms Jackmann said.

"There's not many places these days for them to learn new skills, and get them outdoors and having fun."

Six safe, quiet and sensible horses and ponies will be available for rides, including a black mini named Punch, and Pip, a little chestnut pony.

"Punch has been here since the get-go, he's part of the furniture," Ms Jackmann said. "Pip is quiet and really cute."

Miniature ponies are a good option for children aged two-to-four years of age.

Former racehorse Beauty will also be present as a beginner-safe option for older riders.

In addition to the rides, Mildura Horse Riding School offers standard lessons, as well as a special holiday itinerary that includes a full day program and an overnight camp.

The programs have been created to be suitable for NDIS recipients with the aim of building bonds and self-regulation.

"Horses are really in tune with our emotions, they don't judge," said Ms Jackmann.

"They're really good for the soul."

Helmets and safety stirrups will be provided as part of the Jaycee Park event, with rides priced at $10 a circuit from 10am to 2pm Sunday July 7 and 14.
