Euston walks for autism awareness

EUSTON Public School have taken part in the Walk for Autism challenge, with 100 students, teachers and parents taking to the school oval to raise funds and awareness for people with autism.

The Walk for Autism challenge encouraged Australians to walk 10,000 steps a day for eight days, with funds going towards tailored educational support, improved social environments and early diagnosis for children on the autism spectrum.

Teacher Fiona Kirby, who strived to walk 80,000 steps this week as part of the challenge, said she hoped to raise $500 for the charity.

"We've raised about $200 so far," Ms Kirby said.

"I was inspired because we have a few kids at our school now who do have autism and also my grand-daughter has autism.

"It's about spreading awareness as well as raising money."

Students will also have a dress up day and morning tea as part of this week's Harmony Week, with the theme of inclusion tying in to raising funds for children with autism.

"The theme of this Harmony Week is 'everyone belongs' so we thought we'd invite all the parents along and the kids get to dress up in their cultural dressses or they can wear orange as part of the Harmony Day theme."

Donations can be made by contacting the school or visiting the Walk for Autism website.
