Cultures blend at Mildura’s big day out

THE Sunraysia Multicultural Festival made a triumphant return on Saturday as scores of people celebrated diversity after a two-year break.

The third running of the festival was combined with the Back to the Base Christmas Party and brought performances from around the world to the stage at Mildura Recreation Reserve.

This included a Congolese comedy act, Irish dance and dances from the Samoan and Cook Islands communities.

Festival MC Danielle Hren said as the festival shared the stage with the Back to the Base event, it allowed different communities to “mix as one”.

“It was lovely to see people venturing over that may not have come to our multicultural festival normally, but because they are there for Jessica Mauboy, they did,” Ms Hren said.

She said the fashion parade, which featured cultures from Myanmar, Thailand, East Timor and Burundi, “looked gorgeous”, while the henna and face painting were most popular with kids.
