Pack a punch

THREE boxers from Iron Fist Gym Mildura competed in Adelaide late last month, with two fighters bringing home hardware after a pair of clear-cut victories.

It was another day in the office for Egemen Keleser, one of Australia’s top up-and-coming boxers, as he secured the victory.

Coach Nigel McWilliams said before the fight, Keleser was confident that he would eventually get his hand raised.

“He’s one of those guys who has no doubt when he goes in that he will get the victory and is very surprised if he doesn’t get it,” he said.

“He went in there very confident, worked very hard on the game plan, and executed it perfectly.”

Now Keleser looks ahead as he aims to represent Australia on the national stage eventually.

“He has the opportunity to compete in Brisbane in November for the Australian Institute of Sport and goes to fight for the world selection, so if he wins, he goes to fight in Worlds,” McWilliams said.

“Next one is the club championships, which is on May 9, 10, 11, and we’ll fight right up until November.”

Tyler Nalder, who also won in Adelaide, ended the fight dramatically in the second round.

“Tyler had his first fight and came out strong and listened very well to the instructions I gave him,” McWilliams said.

“The first punch he laid on this kid, he virtually won from there.

“In the first round, he gave his opponent two eight-counts.

“In the second round, he finished his opponent by stoppage, which is rare in amateur boxing.”

Samuel Zara also fought but couldn’t raise his hand, having broken his nose in the first round.

McWilliam said he was proud of his fighters for laying out everything inside the ring.
