Golden grappler earns nomination

KRIS Tonner has earned a strong haul of medals for Brazilian jiu-jitsu in recent years, and this year has been no different.

Gold medals from an array of championships have been the icing on the cake for the grappler, who has also earned the August nomination for the 2024 Northern Mallee Sports Star of the Year.

Tonner put together an impressive performance at the 2024 Australian National Championship in August in Melbourne, where he competed in both Gi and No-Gi divisions in the Master 3 category.

The standout achievement of that weekend was his gold medal in the No-Gi Master 3 97.5kg+ division, which he won by submission.

He also earned a silver medal in the Gi Master 3 100.5kg+ division, a silver in the Absolute No-Gi Master 3 Open Weight, and a bronze in the Absolute Gi Master 3 Open Weight.

This championship capped a stellar year for Tonner, who has accumulated many medal finishes across the country.

Earlier in the year he took home two silver medals at the Western Australia Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and followed up with a strong showing at the ACT Jiu-Jitsu Championship, securing one gold and two bronze medals.

At the Queensland Jiu-Jitsu Championship he added two silver and one bronze to his collection.

Tonner also excelled at the 2024 South Pacific Championship, where he claimed one gold and two silver medals, before taking an impressive haul at the Victorian Jiu-Jitsu Championship with two gold and two silver medals.

His winning streak continued at the Central Coast BJJ Open, where he earned two gold and one silver medal, and at Savage Grappling, where he clinched two gold, one silver and one bronze.

Tonner joins Carolyn Coles (bowls), Kaylene Geddes (golf), Jarod Waters (speedway), Sophie Bowring (roller derby), Charlie Cooper (boxing), Sophie Thomson (water ski racing) and Tony Scott (bowls) as the current nominees for the Manolas Trophy.

As the August winner Tonner received an Intersport voucher and is in the running for the Community Bank Merbein & District 97.9 Triple M Northern Mallee Sports Star of the Year Awards.

The awards night will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025 at the Club Da Vinci, Mildura.

Mallee Sports Assembly is now calling for September nominations for Sports Star of the Year Awards.

Nomination forms are available from 101-101a Ninth Street, Mildura or at www.malleesportsassembly.org.au.
