MILDURA Brazilian Jiu-jitsu have come home with a haul of medals across two competitions and two states.
The crew competed both at the ACT state titles and in an Adelaide competition last weekend, securing themselves seven gold, nine silver and four bronze.
In the ACT, Kris Tonner, who was competing in his fourth state title this year, secured a gold, two silvers and a bronze while his son Tristan got himself a silver.
Meanwhile, Ky Thomas – one of five first-time competitors – grabbed himself a silver.
This is the fourth gold Tonner has added to his collection, having previously won the Victorian, NSW and Queensland titles.
In Adelaide, Giselle Spencer, Tyler Carter and Levi Rose all won double gold, Ellie McKiernan picked up double silver and Alex Kane, Harmony Baxter and Taneisha Kirby won silver and bronze.
Athletes Bodey Burnham, Lachie Harkin and Tenzin Dhargyal also competed but didn’t medal.
The club was placed third place on the team’s table, missing second by three points, despite being the only team on the podium with no affiliation clubs representing them.
Coach and owner Luke Burnham said he was really pleased with how his team performed.
“You never know what to expect when you go to comps,” he said.
“You hope for the best but we were pretty stoked.
“We had a lot of first-time competitors and everyone did really well.
“To have people compete in two states on the same weekend is pretty exciting and I’m really happy for the team.”
A number of scholarship athletes competed across the weekend and Burnham offered a special thanks to BJJ athlete Alex’s father Jak Kane, who donated the funds for their registrations.
The team is now looking to prepare for the national titles in a few weeks in Melbourne.
