IT’S not uncommon for brothers to fight, make up and then repeat the process.
When emotions run high, ultimately all it takes is a little bit of time to be back at it annoying each other once again.
The Hutchinson brothers, Luke, 17 and Rhys, 14, have had their fair share of scraps over the years but one thing that’s shared between boxers and brothers is that grudges are usually short-lived.
“We’ve had a bit too many, I reckon,” Rhys said.
Luke added that although the worst of it was probably in the past, naturally some physical contact definitely still occurred.
“Yeah, we had plenty and we still do now, only difference is we’ve got a bit of skill now,” he said.
This weekend, they will represent The Boxing Cartel at Dwyer’s Boxing Championships in Mount Gambier, an event which will be Rhys’ first career fight.
Rhys said his brother inspired him to get involved in the sport.
“I’m very excited for my first fight,” he said.
“After Luke started, it didn’t take long for me to want to get involved, too.”
With a career record of 4-3, Luke said that his passion for the sport came about quickly after he made the switch from another sport almost two years ago.
“I used to play footy then I stopped playing footy and started boxing and immediately fell in love with it,” he said.
“I love the toughness and two guys getting in the ring and clashing heads.
“I love the fitness too, it’s taught me a lot inside of boxing and in life in general and it’s nice to see that that’s rubbed off on the little brother too.”
The Boxing Cartel owner, Nick Wakefield said that both brothers had worked hard to make it to this event.
“For Rhys, it’s a little bit different being his first fight, basically you just monitor how he trains and we thought we’d nominate him for this one which is a testament to the work that he’s put in,” he said.
This Saturday at Dwyer’s Boxing Championships, Luke will fight in the 80kg light-heavy weight division while Rhys will compete in the catch-weight 63kg.
