Grass is greener for Kade

IF you’ve seen a young man towing a lawn mower and other gardening equipment around town on his bicycle, then you may have laid eyes on Sunraysia’s youngest entrepreneur.

Kade Treweek, 14, arrived in Mildura almost six months ago and already he’s established himself in the community as a go-getter with a solid work ethic and passion for gardening.

The former Melburnian started his business, Victa’s Mowing and Garden Care, as a 12-year-old in the northern suburb of Whittlesea.

Although there was more greenery where he used to live, Kade said the community feel and climate in Sunraysia had led to more work.

“It’s definitely been better up here … a lot more people are interested in getting their lawn done, compared to Melbourne,” he said.

“People don’t really water their grass and only in winter you get busy, in summer nobody’s interested in your service.”

With the blessing of his parents, Kade decided to home-school so that he could follow his passion.

While many children would salivate at the thought of such an arrangement, few would be motivated to maintain the schedule he’s given himself.

“In the morning, I usually have home-school stuff to do so I make sure to get that done,” he said.

“I’ll also walk my sister to school in the morning too, come back home, go off and do my jobs and then I’ll go pick up my sister from school.”

Grateful for the support of locals, Kade said he’d only learnt recently that he’d been a popular topic of discussion in Facebook community groups.

“I went to a job the other day and the lady I was working for told that I’ve been pretty popular on this group on Facebook,” he said.

“But I wasn’t in the group so I had no idea about it.”

In the future, Kade said he hoped to expand his work and looked forward to learning more as he goes.

“TAFE is something I can see myself doing,” he said. “But eventually as I get older I’d like to start my own little business or even join up with someone and help them do it.”
