BUSINESS is blooming for florists, with many people turning to flowers as a special gift or way to cheer up friends and family during the pandemic.
While many businesses have struggled since COVID-19 hit Australia, florists have been “one of the lucky ones”.
Nean’s Florist owner Jannine Fox said she has been thankful to keep her doors open throughout all six Victorian lockdowns.
“The flower industry is one of the lucky ones having been still able to operate and it has actually increased my business,” she said.
“I do feel guilty saying that while so many others are doing it tough.”
While flowers have always been a popular choice of gift for special occasions, Ms Fox is seeing many more orders of flowers “just because” and as random acts of kindness.
“People are buying flowers to cheer people up or for others they are buying them because they are unable to see that person but want to give them something to say they are thinking of them,” she said.
“For funerals and birthdays people don’t normally bring flowers if they are able to attend but with restrictions that has changed so people are sending flowers instead.
“I recently had one order where a man was in hospital and wanted to anonymously send flowers to the person in the room next to him in the hope it would brighten their day.”
Ms Fox said with flowers generally being a “bit of a luxury and not something you would generally buy for yourself”, recipients were always very excited to receive their special deliveries.
Lockdowns have seen the storefront shut, which has seen an increase in deliveries and pushed for those wanting flowers to be a bit more organised then they previously had been.
