MEMBER for Mildura Ali Cupper welcomed news of support payments for workers and businesses in Sunraysia as residents struggle through yet another lockdown.
The Victorian Government last week announced it would fund support payments for Victorians outside Commonwealth-designated hot spots, with more than $200 million made available for regional Victorian business owners and sole traders.
Ms Cupper applauded the collaborative approach taken by state and federal governments to ensure people in Sunraysia can keep the lights on through Victoria’s fifth lockdown.
“I’m pleased to see there’s been constructive talks between the State and Federal Government to deliver support in a needs-based fashion,” Ms Cupper said.
“It’s important that regional businesses feel supported and aren’t left out, as lockdown is affecting livelihoods and bottom lines, regardless of whether you’re in a hot spot or not.”
Up to 90,000 businesses will receive payments of $3000 through the Licensed Hospitality Venue Fund, or $2000 through the Business Costs Assistance Program.
In addition to the business support grants, workers who lost 20 or more hours of work due to the latest lockdown are eligible for a $600 payment, those losing eight to 20 hours can receive $375.
Applications for income support payments can be made through Services Australia’s online portal at www.servicesaustralia.gov.au.
The Commonwealth will issue these payments for workers in hot spots, while the Andrews Government will handle payments for workers outside hot spot areas.
“Having that support net … does provide some reassurance,” Ms Cupper said.
“It’s heartening to see workers are being considered, regardless of their location.”
