ALDI Australia says it aims to become the first supermarket chain in Australia to have 100 per cent of its operations powered by renewable energy by the end of next year, with the Mildura store leading the charge.
The project would include Australia’s largest commercial solar roll-out, with 250 Aldi stores and distribution centres set to have solar installations by the end of this year.
Aldi’s Mildura store, opened in April last year was among the first to have been fitted with solar panels.
The national project will install 102,000 solar panels to power the equivalent of 7000 homes.
Wind farms will also provide renewable energy to Aldi’s Victorian and NSW stores, the company said.
Aldi Australia chief executive Tom Daunt said he hoped the move to renewable energy would set an example for other companies to strive toward a more sustainable future.
“We are making a significant investment in our future,” he said.
“What we hope is that more businesses like ours will invest in renewable energy and it will become more accessible and affordable for everyday Australians.”
