MILDURA hairdresser Jaki Dimasi will try her luck in an internationally recognised hair competition next weekend.
Ms Dimasi will travel to Adelaide for the L’Oreal Colour Trophy 2020 semi-final after successfully completing the first part of the competition.
“You had to send in a photo first and they have international judges who pick 15 semi-finalists from each state to go through,” she said.
“I’ll be up against 15 other people where we have to recreate a picture live in front of judges.”
During the competition, Ms Dimasi will be required to recreate the chosen look, including hair colouring, styling and completing her model’s make-up, within four hours.
This year she will take a Mildura resident and client, Angel Larkin, as her model.
“It is like The Block, you have so many hours to recreate the look, get the make-up and hair done in that amount of time,” she said.
“You have to do it as close to the photo as possible.
“Then they judge it from there and they announce the top three for each region.”
The grand final is then held in Melbourne and the winner moves on to the international component.
Ms Dimasi has competed in the L’Oreal Colour Trophy for the past three years, making the semi-finals twice and the grand final in 2018.
However, this year she is missing something special for the chance to compete.
“I am missing my daughter’s 21st for it,” she said with a laugh.
“She didn’t talk to me for 24 hours.”
With a pretty good track record in the competition, Ms Dimasi seemed fairly confident but she said it was all about how contestants go on the day.
“I work really well under pressure but at the end of the day it’s how the hair is sitting on the day,” she said.
“I didn’t think about it at the time, but Angel’s hair can be quite hard to style, colouring is fine but the style is going to be tricky but that’s OK.
“I’ll just wing it, I always do.”
Ms Dimasi said the competition was a great way for any hairdresser to put themself out there and try something different.
“It’s just about putting yourself out there and doing something different,” she said.
“It’s better than just doing the same thing all the time.”
