Dimmeys unable to confirm Mildura store future

THE Mildura future of discount retailer Dimmeys is uncertain after a statement this week.

Good news for the retailer came when it announced 12 of its 16 Victorian stores would remain open.

However, closure of only two stores – Geelong and Swan Hill – had been confirmed.

Part-owner Doug Zappelli will take over the day-to-day operations of the Victorian stores and told the Herald Sun Dimmeys would only keep open stores that the company owned.

“We will have a much smaller business but it will be an easier business to operate,” he said on Wednesday.

“We’ve been in business since 1853. If we stick to our policy of providing the customer with a bargain, they will keep coming back.”

Doors to the Mildura store remained open on Friday and a “closing down sale” window advertisement was no longer on display.

This week’s announcement came after Dimmeys financial controller Madhu Khadka told Sunraysia Daily late last year the Mildura store would close due to a tough retail climate and business in regional stores being affected by drought.

The company was unable to confirm which two other stores would close.

The discounter is among retailers, including Harris Scarfe and Jeanswest, that have announced closures nationwide in past months.
