Boxing Day bargains bring out shoppers

SUNRAYSIA shoppers took advantage of big bargains on Thursday, which retailers were describing as the busiest day of the year.

The shops were bustling as the public searched for the best deals on everything from clothes to home wares and appliances.

Mildura Central operations manager Michael Thomson said the centre was well staffed and ready for the big crowds.

“Usually our carpark is full somewhere around 11.30am,” he said.

“There are some pretty good sales at places like JB Hi-Fi, so I think that is probably our busiest store.

“We just have to roster accordingly and have our attendants help people as soon as possible so they can leave happy.”

Joanne Golinski and her daughter hit Mildura Central early on Thursday morning to avoid the big crowds.

“We are shopping for a birthday present for my husband and then just having a look around for some Boxing Day deals,” she said.

“I’m looking to get out of here now but I think my daughter might still be looking for some more things.

“She has Christmas money to burn.”

Langtree Mall was another hot spot for shoppers and Mildura City Heart administration assistant Raelene Shields said there was plenty of people around.

She said the retailers were hoping the recent addition of live music would help keep shoppers around.

“We had a massive lead-up to Christmas when it comes to gift-card sales so we are hoping that a lot of those will come back into the precinct,” she said.

“We have had a great crowd here since 9am and it’s got a really nice feel.

“We have tried live music for the first time so hopefully that keeps people in the mall for a bit longer.”

Mr Thomson said he had noticed the centre getting busier each year on Boxing Day.

“It’s definitely getting busier as the years go along,” he said.

“I think the sales are being pushed out a bit more and they try and top their sales from last year.”
