Hard Workers top the table

WORKERS finished the Bowls Sunraysia Midweek Division 1 Pennant season as minor premiers with a massive 58-shot win over Ouyen and firm as flag favourites going into next week’s finals.

Played at the complex the Workers unit lead from the get go with a dominant performance.

Ken Job led Eddy Vuik, Peter Mitchell and Trish Walters to a massive 42 to 9 win over Geoff Hahnel. He was soundly backed up by Peter Bishop who collected a 36 to 15 win over Janet Vallance.

Fred Bacon piloted his rink to a 28 to 24 win over Sue Kelly’s who fought out the match to the last.

Workers step forward to the qualifying final against Mildura after securing a season ending win 106 (12) to 48 (0).

Mildura hosted Red Cliffs at the House of Magic and had everything to play for going into next week’s finals.

After two solid defeats the Magic were looking for a resurrection and a focus on finals.

The Tigers turned up with everything to play for; a win would secure a finals spot, a loss could potentially place them in no man’s land.

Isaiah Bettess got the Magic off to a solid start getting the best out of his unit recording a solid 32 to 18 win over Bruce Harford.

The Magic’s Ken Yeowart played a solid game and kept the scoreline tight losing 21 to 24 to Michael Clifford.

But it was the Mildura master wizard Mark Eckel who was on the brunt of a kick in the pants when Carolyn Coles drilled her rink of Darren Robinson, Luke Savaidis-Milne and Trev Clarke who produced quality bowls setting up opportunities allowing Coles to generate a 31 to 7 win over the Mildura rink of Glenys Yeowart, Corey Bettess and Ken Capper.

Ultimately, the Tigers took the victory 73 (10) to 60 (2), which guarantees them a place in the finals next week.

The third game of the round saw Irymple hosting Coomealla at the Cauldron with the Sun’s running out comfortable winners with a 99 (10) to 56 (2) win over the Cannons.

The destroyers for the Suns was Graham Phillips whose foursome recorded the best rink win for the season with a 47 to 9 win over Dink Nichols, Nan Bath, Neva Cooke and Angela St Clair, with Phillips rink including Mick Legin, Julie Lowerson and George Millward.

Next door Ian Kellett had his colours lowered by Rob Nichols 22 to 24, and Wayne Gardner chimed in getting his team home 30 to 23 over Peter Lambert.

Next week finals will see Workers take on Mildura at Workers while Irymple host Red Cliffs at the Cauldron.

Second division home and away matches concluded last week and after Monday’s pause, next week will see Mildura host Wentworth in the grand final qualifier and Euston will welcome Workers at the Euston Club in the elimination final.
